Since 1996, General Charles C. Krulak's Crucible has been the gut-wrenching rite that molds Marines, shaping mind, body, and soul (WCBD News 2, June 9, 2021). At MCRD Parris Island (since 1915) and San Diego (since 1921), the Mississippi River splits their hallowed ground, each flaunting the "We Make Marines" sign. Recruits crush a 9-mile hike to the Iwo Jima statue or a 9.7-mile Reaper hill assault, honoring Mount Suribachi's legends. Exhausted but fierce, they earn their Eagle, Globe, and Anchor (EGA) before a warrior's breakfast.

Back in the Civil War, families lit candles to guide warriors home and pray for their survival.
